Belgium E-Invoice Format
Belgian e-invoices use one format: Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. This page explains the standard and why it is the only format a Belgian shop needs. PrestaShop E-Invoicing produces it from every order.
What Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 is
Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 is the invoice format of the Peppol network. It stacks three standards.
| Standard | Published by | What it defines |
|---|---|---|
| EN 16931 | CEN, the European standards body | The content of an invoice: which fields exist and what they mean |
| UBL 2.1 | OASIS | The XML syntax that writes those fields into a file |
| Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 | OpenPeppol | The rules every invoice on the Peppol network follows |
Every Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 file is a valid EN 16931 invoice. The format covers invoices and credit notes. Access points check each file against the published validation rules, so a recipient receives only files its software can read.
Why Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 is the only format you need in Belgium
Since 1 January 2026, invoices between Belgian businesses must be structured e-invoices. Peppol is the default network for them, so every Belgian business must be reachable on it. Peppol carries invoices in Peppol BIS Billing 3.0.
| Where the invoice goes | Format |
|---|---|
| A Belgian business | Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, through your Peppol access point |
| A Belgian public body | Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, through Peppol to Mercurius |
| A consumer | No e-invoice required. Your usual invoice is enough |
| An accountant or an ERP over FTP | Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, unless they ask for another format |
Another format applies only if you and your customer agree on one. For a Belgian shop, one format covers every sale. See Belgium Regulations for the sales the obligation covers.
Selecting Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 in the module
Select UBL Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 in the module configuration. The format applies everywhere: back office downloads, bulk exports, FTP uploads and sending to your Peppol access point. The other formats in that list are not used for Belgian invoices.
